After over 50 years, this historic space takes on new life as YUAN – 永康間
Designed with eco-conscious materials such as flowing stone textures, natural surface finishes, three types of concrete grains, and reclaimed Taiwanese camphor and eucalyptus wood, this renovation balances texture, flow, and memory.
We softened the original wood and plant-heavy language, introducing fluid surfaces and a central island basin surrounded by running water—a gesture of stillness and movement combined.
Echoes of the photo studio and the living herbal wall remain, paying tribute to the site's past while welcoming passersby to pause, feel, and rest beside Yongkang Park.
Curatorial StatementWith this exhibition, we hope the public understands that dogs and cats are not wildlife, rather, they are companion animals domesticated and bred by human tens of thousands years ago or even earlier, to satisfy our various demands (to keep the house safe, to hunt, to carry weight, and for entertainment purposes), and that leaving companion animals like dogs and cats roaming free outdoors is entirely against the animal welfare they deserve.According to the latest information published by the Council of Agriculture, there are currently 160,000 dogs free-roaming extendedly, and not cared for according to the dog's animal welfare. Allowing dogs to roam free is not only against animal welfare, but also leads to issues including the personal safety of children and the elderly, environment sanitation, increased risk of disease transmission, and the impact on the natural ecology, which has grown increasingly severe in recent years. We understand that one exhibition alone cannot place 160,000 dogs in homes all at once, where people will care for them as per the five freedoms of animal welfare, while also contributing to less invasion and harm to wildlife, whose survival is greatly threatened by companion animals. We understand that one exhibition alone cannot solve the problems altogether, but at least we can invite people who love and care animals to see and understand the problem, so that maybe in the future (right away is even better) we will be able to solve the problem together!
